It was a lakeside hotel in Udaipur. In the evening I watched the lights come on in the palace across the water, and realised a maharaja once looked at the very same view. Sightseeing suddenly felt like living there.
QWhat do you look for when choosing a palace hotel?
The view from the room, and the distance to everything else. A room facing the lake or the fort makes a huge difference. We also make sure it is not too far from the old town.
The same palace can feel completely different depending on your room.
QWhat advice do you always give your guests?
Come between October and March, and pack a light jacket for cool mornings. And keep one day free to simply enjoy the hotel — that is the real luxury.
